Wind app private key

What happens if you export your private key?

Updated over a week ago

Wind is a self-custodial gas-less wallet, meaning Web3 transactions in your wind wallet are free, and we can never access your funds or control your account.

When someone signs up for Wind, a wallet address (EOA) is created for you, and a private key is generated. However, this wallet address (EOA) has no special capability to make transactions free/gasless.

Hence, Wind creates a Smart Contract Wallet (SCW) capable of making gasless transactions. This SCW is controlled by the wallet address (EOA) that was created for you in the beginning and belongs to you. All your funds are stored in your SCW to make gasless transactions.

As a result, when you export your private information to other self-custody providers, such as Metamask, Exodus, Zerion, etc., you get access to the wallet address (EOA) and not the SCW, which holds your funds.

To move your funds from your Wind wallet to your actual wallet address, export your private key to any wallet provider and send your Wind balance to that wallet address without incurring any charges.

Please note: The wallet address you get after exporting the private key from Wind is your own wallet address (EOA) that controls your SCW, which you see in the diagram.

Wind can never access your funds or close your account; you can always move funds anywhere you want for free.
