Wind is Migrating to a Custodial Wallet Architecture by March 16, 2025

To provide a smoother, more secure, and feature-rich experience, Wind is transitioning from a non-custodial to a custodial wallet architecture. We have not taken this decision lightly - but after observing user behaviour in our applications.

Why We're Making This Change?

1. Simplified User Experience

Wind is targeting mainstay Web 2.0 and Web2.5 users. Managing private keys has been challenging for many of our users, as it requires an unfamiliar level of responsibility. Moving to a custodial model removes this friction and will ensure users' safety, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience.

2. Supporting more chains

Users want support for more tokens and more chains. Wind's self-custody, gasless architecture makes it difficult to support some chains (like Tron) where there is significant demand - but does not support gasless transactions. Moving to a self-custody architecture means we can now support more high-demand chains.

3. Adapting to Evolving Blockchain Standards

The frequent introduction of new ERC standards (e.g., from ERC-712 to ERC-4337) requires constant upgrades. Being self-custodial means we cannot arbitrarily shift all our users to new standards. By shifting to a custodial model, we can efficiently integrate the latest advancements while offering gas-less transactions at scale without major disruptions.

What This Means for You

  • Your security and control remain unchanged - Wind cannot access your account or funds without your explicit permission. Your funds are safely stored through Fireblocks - a standard in digital asset management used by companies like Revolut, etoro, animoca brands, Ava labs, and more.

  • Your experience will only improve - Transactions will be smoother, features like gas-less transactions will be more reliable, and you'll have easier access to multiple chains.

Thank you for being part of Wind's journey!
